Few women have left as indelible a mark on Canadian soccer as midfielder Diana Matheson. Her contributions to the sport, coupled with her illustrious career, have solidified her status as a pivotal figure in Canadian women’s soccer history.

Diana Matheson, who boasts the third-highest number of appearances in the history of the Canadian national women’s team, stands as a testament to her enduring influence on the game. Her remarkable achievements include not one, but two Olympic bronze medals earned through her match-winning heroics in the memorable 2012 Olympic Games. Matheson’s on-field prowess played a pivotal role in shaping Canada into a formidable force in international soccer.

In 2021, Diana Matheson decided to hang up her boots as a player, but her commitment to the sport remains unwavering. She has embarked on an exciting new venture, spearheading Canada’s pioneering professional women’s soccer league, aptly named Project 8. Her dedication to advancing women’s soccer is further exemplified by her recent presentation to a captivated audience at the Saskatoon Club.

Reflecting on her visit to Saskatchewan, Matheson expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome: “Saskatchewan Soccer has been an unbelievable host.”

She also recounted her interactions with the REX program and enthusiastically addressed the sold-out gathering, emphasizing her enthusiasm for the prospect of bringing a professional women’s team to the Prairies in 2025.

The proposed league, Project 8, envisions a vibrant landscape of women’s soccer, with eight teams strategically distributed across the nation. Notably, Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto have already been confirmed as inaugural teams, setting the stage for a promising future for women’s soccer in Canada. Diana Matheson’s unwavering dedication continues to leave an enduring legacy, ensuring that the sport she loves continues to flourish on both national and international stages.
