After an impressive stint as interim head coach for Angel City FC, Becki Tweed has officially been named the team’s permanent head coach. This decision comes after a rigorous five-month search to find the right leader for the club.
General manager Angela Hucles Mangano expressed her confidence in Tweed, highlighting her ability to earn the trust and support of the players quickly. “Becki emerged as the absolute right choice not only due to her record, which exceeded expectations by anyone’s measure but also her ability to instill belief in the players that they could turn the season around and make playoffs,” Mangano said.
Tweed assumed the role of interim head coach after Angel City FC parted ways with Freya Coombe in mid-June. Under Tweed’s leadership, the team demonstrated remarkable progress, achieving an 8-win, 2-loss, and 5-draw record in all competitions. This impressive performance secured a spot in the NWSL playoffs for the club on the season’s final day.
While Angel City’s playoff journey ended with a 1-0 defeat to OL Reign in the NWSL quarterfinal, Tweed’s impact on the team was undeniable. Her success as interim head coach has allowed her to continue building on the foundation laid as she strives to fulfill the club’s higher expectations.
“I’m proud to be staying with Angel City,” said Tweed. “I am most excited to have the opportunity to pick up where we left off. We aren’t starting over. We are continuing to build and have unfinished business. We have created a strong foundation, and now our expectations are higher.”
Becki Tweed’s permanent appointment as head coach marks a significant step forward for Angel City FC as they work to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in women’s soccer.
