Niamh Duggan, a talented midfielder who spent two years with Reading FC’s academy in the Women’s Super League, has returned to her former club, Aberystwyth Town Women, for the 2023/24 season. The 18-year-old, who has four caps for the Wales Under-17 team, is one of the first signings of the summer transfer window for the Ceredigion-based side.

Duggan expressed her happiness to be back at Park Avenue, where she played in the 2020/21 season and scored two goals in 20 appearances, including one that helped Aber reach the semi-finals of the Adran Trophy. “I’m really happy to be back and can’t wait to get started,” she said in an interview with the club.

Manager Gavin Allen praised Duggan’s ability and potential and said he looked forward to seeing her impact the Genero Adran Premier this season. “It’ll be great to have another homegrown talented player on the pitch for us,” he said. “She’ll strengthen the squad significantly, and I look forward to seeing the impact she makes on the Genero Adran Premier this season.”

As Maisie Miller joined Brighton, Duggan is not the only player who moved to England two years ago. Miller is now with Durham Cestria, who play in the FA Women’s National League. Duggan and Miller were part of the Wales Under-17 team that played against Scotland in February 2022.

In other news, Aberystwyth Town Women have announced that Amy Jenkins will be their new club captain, replacing Kelly Thomas, who has stepped down after two seasons of service. Jenkins, a forward who has been with Aber for 11 years, said she was delighted to take on the role. “I’ve played for Aber for 11 years, and I know exactly what it means to put on this shirt,” she said.

Allen also expressed his gratitude to Thomas for her leadership and contribution to the club and said he was confident that Jenkins would be a great successor. “Kel has been at the heart of Aberystwyth Town Women for well over a decade,” he said. “She has been phenomenal, leading the team to a fourth-place finish and two cup semi-finals, and will still be a big part of our club going forward.”

Aberystwyth Town Women will kick off their Genero Adran Premier campaign on September 10 against Cardiff Met at Park Avenue.
