Soccer stars Kristie Mewis and Sam Kerr are celebrating a significant milestone in their relationship, announcing their engagement after more than two years of being a power couple in women’s soccer.
Mewis, 32, shared the exciting news exclusively with PEOPLE, expressing her joy and gratitude for Kerr’s unwavering support throughout her journey in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The midfielder highlighted the challenging times, such as the unexpected early exit from the 2023 World Cup, and how Kerr has been a pillar of strength, saying, “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics.”
The love story between Mewis and Kerr began to unfold during the Tokyo Olympics, where they initially faced off against each other, representing their respective countries — Mewis with Team USA and Kerr with the Australians. After Team USA secured the bronze medal, the two athletes shared a poignant moment on the field, with Mewis comforting Kerr.
Their romance went public three days later when Kerr posted an Instagram photo of the couple kissing, accompanied by a heart emoji. Since then, they have been open about their relationship on social media, providing glimpses into their long-distance love as Kerr plays for Chelsea FC Women in the U.K. At the same time, Mewis is a midfielder for Gotham FC in New Jersey.
Despite the challenges of being apart, the couple makes it work through technology, with Mewis stating, “It is difficult, of course, just being away from each other, but we have FaceTime.” Kerr added that their shared understanding of the demands of their sport helps them support each other effectively.
In an interview with GAFFER in 2022, Kerr mentioned that their similar career aspirations contribute to the strength of their relationship. “We want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport. She fully gets it, and I get it. So we support each other.”
Mewis also hoped their love story would inspire others to be proud of who they are. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and how they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.
As the soccer world congratulates the engaged couple, Mewis and Kerr continue to be champions on the field and trailblazers and inspirations off the field, breaking barriers with their love and authenticity.
