In an astonishing stride towards her ambitious vision of reshaping women’s sports globally, Michele Kang, owner of the Washington Spirit and the imminent owner of Lyon’s women’s team, has now set her sights on a significant acquisition: London City Lionesses FC of the FA Women’s Championship.

Kang’s relentless pursuit of building a formidable empire in women’s sports has gained momentum with this latest addition. The acquisition of London City Lionesses, founded in 2019 by Diane Culligan, marks a pivotal moment for the team, especially as the only outfit in England’s top two tiers not affiliated with a men’s team.

Expressing enthusiasm for the new venture, Culligan lauded Kang’s leadership and vision in a Spirit news release, remarking on the pride she holds for the journey embarked upon by LCL since its inception.

“This is an exciting opportunity for LCL and the women’s game in the UK and globally. I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved…I am thrilled to be handing over the reins to Michele. Her leadership, drive, and determination will continue to pave the way to achieving growth and sustainability in the women’s game,” shared Culligan.

This acquisition is a pivotal step for Kang, aligning with her mission to establish the foremost female sports organization globally, marked by a high-performance culture both on and off the pitch. It reflects her commitment to nurturing talent, inspiring the next generation, and ensuring the enduring success of women’s sports.

Having sealed her takeover of the Spirit in March 2022 and impending ownership of Lyon’s team, recognized as a pinnacle of European success, Kang’s strategic vision for Lyon encompasses establishing a dedicated training center and potential relocation to a new stadium, further amplifying the team’s stature.

The 64-year-old visionary, upon completing the OL Reign’s sale, will solidify her reign over Lyon, promising transformative changes and hinting at broader expansions. Kang’s unwavering dedication extends beyond Lyon and London City Lionesses as she sets her sights on potential acquisitions in Spain, Italy, Latin America, South America, and Asia, acknowledging these regions as meccas for women’s football.

In Kang’s visionary approach lies a remarkable promise to revolutionize the landscape of women’s sports, emphasizing empowerment, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence across the globe. Her enthusiasm to elevate the status of women’s football to unprecedented heights cements her as a trailblazer in sports ownership and empowerment.
