Emma Hayes is on the cusp of becoming the highest-paid coach in women’s soccer as she prepares to leave Chelsea and take the reins of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) next year.

In a statement released on Saturday, Chelsea confirmed that Hayes “will depart the club at the end of the season to pursue a new opportunity outside of the Women’s Super League (WSL) and club football.” The English club’s season will conclude in May 2024.

During her tenure as Chelsea’s manager, which began in August 2012, Hayes has achieved remarkable success, claiming 15 trophies, including six Women’s Super League titles. Her coaching prowess was further recognized when she received The Best FIFA Football Coach award in 2021.

While Hayes has not finalized her contract with US Soccer, advanced discussions are underway. It is expected that she will be offered a salary that surpasses any coach in the history of women’s soccer.

The 47-year-old’s debut match as the head coach of the USWNT is tentatively scheduled for late May. During the international period commencing on May 27, her new team is set to play two matches. Another pair of games will follow between July 8 and 16, just ahead of the women’s soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics, which begins on July 25.

The appointment of Emma Hayes to lead the USWNT marks a significant moment in the evolution of women’s soccer. It underscores the growing recognition of the sport’s top talents, both on and off the pitch. As Hayes embarks on this new chapter in her career, the soccer world will be closely watching to see how her coaching expertise further elevates the USWNT’s performance on the international stage.
