Atlético Madrid Femenino is the women’s football team of Atlético Madrid, one of Spain’s most successful and famous clubs. The team currently plays in Liga F, the country’s highest level of women’s football, and has won four league titles, two Copa de la Reina trophies, and one Supercopa de España trophy in its history.

The origins of the team date back to the late 1980s, when Atlético Madrid had a women’s team for the first time. They won the national league in 1990 and were runners-up the following year, but they were disbanded in the early 1990s due to financial difficulties. Most of the players joined CD Oroquieta Villaverde, which became one of the leading teams in Spain at the time.

The team was re-established in 2001, but it was not until 2005 that they became an official section of Atlético Madrid. After playing three seasons in regional leagues, they earned two consecutive promotions to reach the top division in 2006. Since then, they have established themselves as one of the top teams in the country, consistently finishing in the top half of the table and qualifying for European competitions.

The team achieved its first major trophy in 2016, beating FC Barcelona 3-2 in the Copa de la Reina final, the Spanish women’s cup. The following year, they won their first league title, ending the season unbeaten and dethroning Barcelona as the champions. They repeated this feat in 2018 and 2019, winning three consecutive league titles and securing a permanent trophy. They also reached the final of the Copa de la Reina in both years but lost to Barcelona on both occasions.

In 2019, Atlético Madrid Femenino made history by breaking the European record for attendance at a women’s football match. A crowd of 60,739 spectators filled the Metropolitano Stadium, the home ground of Atlético Madrid, to watch them play against Barcelona in a league fixture. Although they lost 2-0, they showed passion and support for their team and women’s football.

The team also made strides in European competitions, reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2020. They faced Barcelona again, and despite losing 1-0 in the first leg at home, they managed to draw 1-1 away and force extra time. However, they eventually lost 3-1 on aggregate and were eliminated from the tournament.

The current squad of Atlético Madrid Femenino is composed of talented and experienced players from different countries and backgrounds. Some of the notable players include Merel Van Dongen (Netherlands), Hanna Lundkvist (Sweden), Ana-Maria Crnogorčević (Switzerland), Vilde Bøe Risa (Norway), Rasheedat Ajibade (Nigeria), Leicy Santos (Colombia), Sonia García Majarín (Spain), and Andrea Medina (Spain). The team is coached by Óscar Fernández, who took over from Manolo Cano in 2021.

Atlético Madrid Femenino is a team representing the values and spirit of Atlético Madrid: hard work, passion, commitment, and ambition. They are a force to be reckoned with in Spanish women’s football and a source of pride and inspiration for their fans and supporters. They are always ready to fight for their goals and dreams, as their motto says: Nunca dejes de creer (Never stop believing).
