FC Barcelona Femení, commonly known as Barça Femení, is a Spanish professional women’s football team based in Barcelona, Catalonia. It competes in the Primera División, the top tier of Spanish women’s football. The team has won 20 domestic trophies and two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, making it the most successful club in Spanish women’s football history.

    History

The origins of FC Barcelona Femení date back to 1970, when 18-year-old Immaculada “Imma” Cabecerán Soler met with former FC Barcelona president Agustí Montal Costa to discuss forming a women’s team associated with the club. Cabecerán founded Peña Femenina Barcelonista, an independent group that played under the name of FC Barcelona without being officially part of the club. Peña Femenina Barcelonista was one of the founding members of Spain’s first recognized women’s league, the Primera División, in 1980.

In 1988, Peña Femenina Barcelonista changed its name to Club Femení Barcelona and continued to play as an unofficial section of FC Barcelona until 2002, when the club finally incorporated Club Femení Barcelona into its sports structure. Since then, FC Barcelona Femení has been an official section of FC Barcelona and has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity and success.

    Achievements

FC Barcelona Femení has dominated Spanish women’s football in the last decade, winning eight Primera División titles, nine Copas de la Reina (the Spanish women’s cup), and three Spanish Supercups. The team has also broken several records in the process, such as becoming the first team to win six consecutive league titles (from 2015 to 2020), the first team to win four straight doubles (league and cup) (from 2017 to 2020), and the first team to win all domestic competitions in a single season (in 2020–21).

FC Barcelona Femení has also made history in European competitions, becoming the first Spanish team to reach the quarterfinals (in 2014), the semifinals (in 2017), and the final (in 2019) of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. In 2021, FC Barcelona Femení achieved its most extraordinary feat by winning its first Champions League title, beating Chelsea 4–0 in the final. In doing so, FC Barcelona became the first club to win a Champions League title for its men’s and women’s footballing sections. In 2023, FC Barcelona Femení repeated its success by winning its second Champions League title, defeating Wolfsburg 3–1 in the final. By winning the Champions League, FC Barcelona became the first Spanish women’s team to complete a continental treble (league, cup, and Champions League) in 2020–21 and 2022–23.

    Players

FC Barcelona Femení has a talented and diverse squad of players from different countries and backgrounds. Some of the most notable players include:

    • Alexia Putellas: The captain and midfielder of FC Barcelona Femení, Alexia Putellas, is one of the best players in the world. She has won numerous awards, including the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year (2021) and Best FIFA Women’s Player (2023). She is also a vital member of the Spain national team.
    • Asisat Oshoala: The Nigerian striker is one of the most prolific scorers in FC Barcelona Femení history. She joined the club in 2019 and scored over 100 goals in all competitions. She is also a four-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year and a two-time BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.
    • Lucy Bronze: The English defender is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world. She joined FC Barcelona Femení in 2021 after winning several trophies with Lyon and Manchester City. She is also a former UEFA Women’s Player of the Year (in 2019) and a former Best FIFA Women’s Player (in 2020).

    Future

FC Barcelona Femení has established itself as one of the best teams in the world and has set high standards for itself and for Spanish women’s football. The team aims to continue its dominance in domestic and European competitions and to inspire more girls and women to play and enjoy football. FC Barcelona Femení is more than a club, it is a symbol of excellence, passion, and pride.
