Arsenal Football Club has clarified that increasing diversity is a “key priority” following criticism of an all-white women’s squad photo posted on social media earlier this month. The image depicted 27 players along with head coach Jonas Eidevall, and its lack of diversity led to significant backlash from fans.

The club acknowledged the issue and released a statement addressing the matter. “We acknowledge our current women’s first-team squad does not reflect the diversity across the club and the communities we represent,” Arsenal stated.

The club emphasized its pride in the diverse backgrounds of players who have contributed to Arsenal’s history, success, and culture across all its teams, including the men’s and women’s academies.

Diversity in Women’s Football: An Urgent Necessity A comprehensive review into women’s football, chaired by former Lioness Karen Carney earlier this year, highlighted the critical need to foster greater diversity both on and off the pitch in women’s football. In the review, this issue was described as requiring “urgent” attention by ex-Brighton defender Fern Whelan.

While England’s victorious Euro 2022 squad included three mixed-heritage players, it is notable that none were part of the unchanged starting 11. The review highlighted the necessity of addressing the severe lack of diversity in the women’s game, and Arsenal’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is a vital step forward.

The Arsenal Statement: A Call to Action Arsenal’s statement underscored the importance of increased participation among young women and girls from diverse backgrounds at the academy level. Specific measures are being put in place to enhance pathways and accessibility.

In conclusion, the club reemphasized its dedication to driving greater diversity and inclusion while fostering a sense of belonging for everyone connected to the club.

Arsenal’s declaration to prioritize diversity reflects a growing awareness and determination to foster inclusion and representation in women’s football. The club’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to the issue and the potential for real change in the sport.
